Getting to Know Us: Tideworks Employees Working abroad

By May 10, 2016All

Tideworks makes a lot of snappy products and provides a cadre of mission critical services. And still the best thing about us is our people.

Tideworks employees are much like yourself, if you’re the kind of person who even when things are going well asks, “Wouldn’t be better if we did this?!”

Today and as we move forward we’ll introduce you to more and more of the Tideworks people who possess an almost uncanny ability to reframe existing problems and identify long term opportunities.

People like our first Tideworks Technology Employee Profile:  Mitch Hall.

Get to know Mitch here and at TOC Europe June 14-16 in Hamburg, Germany. Stop by the Tideworks booth B64, say hi and find out for yourself why we really mean it when we say we’ll help you navigate the technology landscape together.

What is your role?
Senior Account Executive

Why are you living and working outside of the U.S.?
New challenges, adventure, and better access to Belgian beer.

What song best describes your current expat experience?
“North American Scum” by LCD Soundsystem

How long have you been living outside of the U.S?
2+ years

What’s your favorite new foreign word and its English translation?
Handschoenen = Gloves. (Literally “hand shoes.” Adorable!)

What’s the strangest food you’ve eaten since being out of the U.S. and why?
Raw “new” herring smothered in onions. Held by the tail and eaten like swallowing a sword. Classic Dutch.

What do you miss most back in the US of A?
Mexican food. The real stuff. They have a lot of good international cuisine here, but the search continues for an honest-to-goodness relleno with actual spiciness. Oh, and my family I suppose…but really the rellenos.

Who from Tideworks do you wish would leave the states, come join you and why?
I’ve been lucky to have a lot of visitors, but my sister Pearce Cobarr and I would mine this place for comedy gold!

What movie best personifies how much you enjoy your international life?
“Goldmember”

What Tideworks product or service is most exciting to demo and/or talk about and why?
Intermodal Pro and Traffic Control. We’re the clear leaders in the rail sector.

What do the people you meet think about Tideworks and America?
They want to know if we’re all “packing heat.”

What’s the best time you’ve had with an international customer or colleague?
Deer hunting at night with a couple Frenchmen from the back of a pickup. (Sorry, Nathan Bailey!)

What are you going to miss most about your current location when/if you come home?
The whole continent is a history lesson. Most Americans don’t get to see the lingering effects of centuries of armed conflict with political upheaval outside of Black Friday sales at Target.

Would you considering working in a different international location, and why?
Absolutely. I’ve moved around a lot in my lifetime so the nomadic life suits me. It helps to have a spouse who is fearless, and modern technology makes it so much easier to keep in touch with friends and loved ones.

Living in another country is the best experience I’ve ever had, learn about other cultures, people traditions and their point of view of the rest of the world is just amazing.
